In India, a PAN card number is a kind of Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and is required for any kind of transaction. How to Apply for an NRI PAN card online?

The application for a PAN card for an NRI can be completed online by following these steps -2

  1. Step 1- Visit the NSDL, UTIITSL or any other website allowing PAN applications.
  2. Step 2 – Choose Form 49A (for Indian citizens, including NRIs)
  3. Step 3 - Fill out the application form by entering personal details such as name, date of birth, and contact details, etc. and select the category NRI
  4. Step 4 – Upload the required documents
  5. Step 5 – Pay the processing fee online using the available options
  6. Step 6 - Apply and get the acknowledgement number to track the progress of your application.
 

Documents Required for NRI PAN Card Application

An NRI must submit a copy of their passport along with the PAN application form as proof of identity. For proof of address, any one of the following documents are required:3

  • a) Copy of passport
  • b) Copy of bank account statement from the country of residence
  • c) Copy of NRE bank account statement showing at least two transactions in the last six months, duly attested by the Indian Embassy, Consular Office, High Commission, Apostille, or the bank manager (the applicant can also be a joint holder)
 

Types of PAN Card Applications for NRIs

When applying for a PAN card the form you need to choose depends mainly on your citizenship status

 

Form 49A – for NRIs holding Indian citizenship.

This form is meant for Indian citizens who live abroad and want a PAN card for conducting any sort of financial transaction in India or for tax filing purposes

 

Form 49AA – for foreign nationals or entities.

This form is mandatory for foreign nationals, OCI and foreign entities. If you are a citizen of a foreign country or a foreign company planning financial transactions in India.

 

PAN Card Fees for NRIs

If you want a physical copy of a PAN card and you submit the PAN application at an authorized TIN facilitation or PAN centres with physical documents, the current application fee is ₹1017. If you don’t require the physical PAN card in this case, the fee is reduced to ₹72.

If you apply online and use the paperless mode of application, the fee is ₹1011 for a physical card. If you don’t need a physical card, the fee is ₹66.
